Most electrical panels last 25–40 years, but the way we use power has changed faster than the panels have. EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges and finished basements all pull far more current than a 1980s 100 amp panel was built for. If you see any of these signs, it's time to talk to an electrician about an electrical panel upgrade.
1. Breakers trip when several appliances run
Running the microwave and the toaster at once shouldn't shut off the kitchen. Frequent trips mean circuits are overloaded or the panel can't deliver the amperage your home needs.
2. The panel is a fuse box or a Federal Pacific / Zinsco brand
Fuse boxes and certain old breaker brands are known to fail to trip during a fault. Replacement is the safest fix and often required by insurers.
3. No open slots for new circuits
If your electrician has to double-tap breakers or add tandem breakers, the panel is full. A 200 amp panel with 40 spaces gives you room for the next project — an EV charger, a hot tub or a standby generator.
4. Lights dim when the AC or dryer starts
Voltage sag under load is a symptom of an undersized service or loose connections at the panel.
5. Warm panel, buzzing or a burning smell

6. Rust, corrosion or water marks
Moisture inside a panel corrodes bus bars and breakers. It's a fire risk and usually means the panel needs replacing.
7. You're planning an addition, EV or electric appliances
